Weekly Research Blog 6

This week in Vault I read articles on Super Bowl ads. These ads provided me with insight on why the Super Bowl is the top event for marketing and advertising agencies. One factor that makes Super Bowl ads appealing to consumers is the incorporation of celebrities, who grab our attention. From these articles, I began researching the neuromarketing behind advertising. I have yet to start notes on these, but from what I have read, I have learned that there are different aspects of our brain that connect us to certain ads. Also, one of the sources gives a layout to a sales pitch. My plan for Mardi Gras break is to research as much as possible because this is a great opportunity to research and reflect on my own time.

Weekly Research Blog 5

I am writing this blog post today because I will be at Model UN tomorrow. Therefore, I will be missing a Vault session tomorrow. This week I only had one vault session in class because we watched presentations in the other class. I made up for this by completing a Vault session in my free study and a Vault session at my house. In the Vault session in class, I watched two podcasts from the Digital Marketing Podcast which I found on Spotify. It took me a while to dig, but I found two good ones: The State of Digital Skills and Education and The 4 P’s of Marketing. These kind of just refreshed my memory on what my first sources were on. I also annotated, read, and took notes on two sources on celebrities. One dealt with celebrities in Super Bowl ads and the other dealt with celebrities in ads in general. I learned that consumers are actually more attracted to commercials or ads with celebrities because it grabs their attention and they end up trying the product in hopes of achieving the same “image” as the celebrity. I found these two sources incredibly interesting because they helped me realize a new factor in ways that people are attracted to certain ads. I plan to continue researching what makes ads and commercials attractive and grasping to customers and what techniques are used to achieve this.

I have made pretty good progress the past couple of weeks with my research. I have an appropriate amount of sources, but my sources are relatively short so my notes are thorough but not that long. My most pressing concern at the moment is finding sources that best suit my topic and give me insight into advertising and controversial ads. I have now narrowed down my research to the evolution of modern marketing and exploring “show business” at work. The sources about marketing have helped me in understanding what a business has to do to attract customers more than a fellow company. My future goals are to narrow my research so that I can start confining my research and making it less broad. Since my last research check, I have completed 9 more sources.Overall, I am proud of my dedication and effort throughout the past Vault sessions.

Weekly Research 3

This week in Vault, I began taking notes and annotating new sources. I had a productive week. I learned new facts about marketing and advertising. Something interesting I learned is that the “4 Ps of Marketing” are constantly changing and evolving. Marketing techniques have to constantly change due to improvements and innovations in technology. The same marketing techniques today are not the same as the ones twenty years ago. I also discovered that I want to start shifting my topic towards “show business” because I found that this idea ties all of my ideas together because it incorporates, both, marketing and advertising. I also found a book called “There’s No Business That’s Not Show Business.” This book provides insight to my idea of following the topic of show business. It includes case studies of success and non-success stories, which will be beneficial to my learning.

As I am beginning to think about who I would like my advisor to be, I have taken into account many factors that would make a good advisor for me and my process. I would like someone who is always around and is easy to communicate with. I want someone who I am comfortable with and not intimidated by, so they can support me when I am either having doubts or blanking out. I talked to Mrs. Fazely during a meeting with her about who she thinks would help me in my topic the most and she recommended Mrs. Rome, Coach Hoang, Mr. Posey, or Dr. Pritchard. Mr. Posey is my advisor and I have a great relationship with him, so I think we would work well together. Mrs. Rome, Coach Hoang, and Dr. P are all well educated on business and marketing, so they would all be beneficial in giving me new ideas and educating me. Either way I think any of these advisors would be great candidates, each unique in their own way. I think I will need to schedule meetings with all of them to help me choose the right advisor.

This week was another productive week in Vault. I finished up annotating and writing notes on my Prospectus sources. I thought, at first, I did not want to stick with my sources, but I decided that they help me form a foundation for the rest of my research. I completed annotating and taking notes on four sources. I learned even more about marketing than I did the first time reading the sources for my Prospectus. After reading the sources, I found new key terms I want to look up, like global marketing and marketing strategies. Overall, I completed all of my goals for this week and aim to begin finding new sources and taking notes on them next week.

Weekly Research Blog 1

I would say I worked productively this week in Vault time. I hope I can keep up this effort in weeks to come. This week, I made a To-Do list to annotate, find quotes, paraphrase, and make conclusions and further questions about the sources. I completed four of my sources in class, but I missed class today so my plan to make up for that missed time is to annotate one more source from my Prospectus and start researching more possible sources. I learned an abundance of new terms that I am eager to further research. For example, I discovered a new term “intrapreneurship” that I am going to look further into. A challenge I ran into as I began to play around and start finding more sources was that I realized it is difficult to find terms and topics to look up. There is so much on my mind that I want to learn and discover, but I have a hard time piecing words in my head that will lead me to the right sources. Next week, I plan on coming into class focused and ready to begin finding new sources.

Planning Profile

I. Note to Self

I think the result of the Business Insider quiz is accurate for me. I struggle studying and working alone. I enjoy being in a social setting because I can converse my ideas and thoughts with others. This might cause distractions, but I would go crazy if I had to sit alone in my room and work. I would end up just playing on my phone. My favorite places to study are either in a coffeeshop or the library with a friend. I like having the motivation of others by seeing them work hard. I do get distracted by my phone, so it is in my best favor to just put it up. Also, I get distracted by emails or pop-up ads, but I have learned self-control in these situations over the years, so I do have the ability to keep on grinding. I need to make the most of vault time, because I know this is where I will get the majority of my work done. I know that I need to be away from home in a setting where other people are also working so I can get my best work done. I need to take advantage of all class time dedicated to researching and make time once a week for researching.

II. The Right Conditions

In the library, I will be in the back right corner with Allen. Allen and I are both talkative people, but we have agreed that we will both work and encourage each other to work hard. I will be able to lay out my sources, which will be on paper, and have my highlighters and colorful pens available.

Outside of school, I will go to CCs Coffeehouse to vault. CCs is a place where I am the most productive. I have coffee easily available because normally I need coffee to help me not want to fall asleep, and also, I am surrounded by productive people. This is the place I will be able to work the most efficiently.

III. The Right Systems

I will use a huge binder with tabs that divide up my sub-topics. Once I find a source, I will print it out, highlight and annotate it, and deicide what sub-topic it falls under. I will then create a Google Doc that will have all my annotations for my sources. This will include significant quotes, passages, new things I’ve learned, and beneficial facts.

IV: Daily Project Check

I will log my daily research using a sticky note on my laptop. I will include what my goals were for the day, what I completed, and what my goals are for the next day. This might bother me if it clutters my computer, so I might end up having to use my curiosity journal to write my plans down.

NOTES:

  • It can be very helpful to turn to librarians to assist you in research
  • Successful strategy: allow reference works to shape your search efforts .
    • Encyclopedia britannica
    • Encyclopedia of Philosophy
    • Reference works often include citations or bibliographies that can lead you to sources you might otherwise overlook
  • Citation indexing
    • Search for sources in the bibliography
  • Always evaluate sources for relevance
  • When you look beyond the standard kinds of references relevant to your question, you enrich not only your analysis but your range of intellectual reference and your ability to synthesize diverse kinds of data

SOURCES:

  • I have found a diverse amount of sources throughout the span of my research. I have found studies, presentations, and many secondary sources. Some of these sources provide me with the basis of marketing and general facts and strategies of marketing, while others go more in depth. My research of controversial ads has led me to find that marketing is a “show business.” This topic really interested me because it connects marketing and advertising. I also have researched creativity in the marketplace and how a business is not efficient if creativity is lacking. My research is a little all over the place, but I have found all relevant sources  to my topic, and I am slowly working to connect all of these topics and sources I have found so far.

COR 51-67

NOTES:

  • Conceptual problem: arises when we do not understand something about the world as well as we would like
  • Research problems: the word conceptual describes their condition and costs or consequences
    • A researcher without a good conceptual or research problem to work on faces a bad practical problem without one a researcher is out of luck
  • The common structure of problems
    • A situation or condition
    • Undesirable consequences
  • The nature of conceptual problems
    • Any state of affairs
    • Always some version of uncertainty
  • Pure research: addresses a conceptual problem that doesn’t hear directly on any practical situation
  • Applied research: addresses a conceptual problem that doesn’t have practical consequences

TQS STATEMENT:

  • I am studying creativity in the marketplace and also how controversial ads play a key role in affecting a business in order to find out how a business revolves around marketing to help my reader understand the significance of the immense effects marketing has in promoting a business and their product to their consumers

RESEARCH PROBLEM:

  • My research problem is more practical than conceptual because it is very important for the world to understand how to run a business and realize the beneficial factors marketing can have on one’s business.
